The Rochester City Council has approved a measure to increase the hourly rate for parking in downtown.
The measure was proposed after public backlash regarding a separate measure to increase the paid parking hours in Rochester. In the city, driver must pay between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. during the work week.
A proposal, approved earlier this year, sought to extend the paid parking times an extra two hours until 8 p.m.
The decision was met with pushback from drivers and downtown businesses who feared the change would dissuade customers.
In the end, the city decided to change tactics and instead increase the price from $1.50 per hour to $2.
The change is part of a series of moves the city is making to help close a $47 million budget gap.
