ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) — A new report shows startling figures on the number of homeless people in the Rochester area and across New York.

The report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness shows that, on any given night, there are approximately 835 people without a home in Monroe County.

“When I moved out here to New York I didn’t plan on being homeless but it happened,” said Hershal Renville, who is currently living at the homeless encampment on Industrial Street.

Anna Valeria-Iseman, executive director of Open Door Mission, said that 835 per night does not count all the homeless people on the streets, homeless students, and some agencies who do not participate in the count.

Valeria-Iseman said the number one reason for the need for emergency shelter stays in our counties is the breakdown of family relationships. To get to the root of the problem she said we need to address the causes that got them here in the first place.

“Get to know the families that are experiencing homelessness the sooner people get to understand some of these stories the more people see this is something that could happen to anyone.”

Statewide, 91,897 people have no place to go, according to the report, which puts New York tied with Hawaii for the highest rate of homelessness per 10,000 people in the United States. California had the highest total homeless population at 129,972.

At the same time, New York leads the way in beds at emergency shelters with more than 82,000 available in 2018, the report finds. However, California has more options for permanent and transitional housing.

Nationwide, the number of homeless individuals increased for a third straight year in 2018.
