The American Red Cross held a blood drive on Wednesday to honor a Rush-Henrietta coach.
Coach Werner Kleemann is a section V hall of famer – and currently battling leukemia.
In his 34 years of coaching and teaching, he’s seen countless people come up and thank him for his service.
This was the community’s chance to return the favor and donate blood so that someone like coach Kleeman – who receives blood transfusions once a week – has a fighting chance.
“It’s a cross-section of a community that’s very caring and very giving, and I think that’s what pleases me the most,” Kleeman said.
The blood drive had a goal to collect 100 units, in order to break a record. By the end of the day, they had ended up collecting 233 units.
