Red Cross holds annual blood drive to honor Fairport Angels

Local News

For Diane McClure, the years have passed slowly since her daughter Meredith died in a crash in 2007, days after high school graduation.

“Everyday I wake up and think, ‘Oh, I can’t believe it, just like it was yesterday.”

But it’s been 11 years and McClure knows, time doesn’t stop for anyone.

To make sure her daughter’s memory lives on, she attends a blood drive at St. John of Rochester Church, held in honor of the Fairport Angels who died in the crash: Hannah Congdon, Bailey Goodman, Meredith McClure, Sara Monnat and Katie Shirley.

“We put those emotions to good use and march in here and donate,” McClure said.

The American Red Cross said the girls families all participate each year and the turn out is great.

“Last year for our 10th anniversary, we did have a very strong turnout of 90 donors,” Meredith Hobson with the Red Cross said.

McClure said she’s always hopeful people will turn out and that the girls will be remembered, not just by their families, but by the community.

“I remember doing the laundry and I used to do one row per family member. I remember when that row became empty, so it’s just nice to know there will be a channel to have those memories be in our present lives,” McClure said

The Red Cross said 59 units of blood were donated Thursday in memory of the Fairport Angels.

That is enough to help 170 patients.
