Shauna Gumaer is dealing with a nasty problem in her Greece neighborhood.
“We have rats everywhere,” she said. “I’ve watched them go into my neighbor Bill and Linda’s yard and I’ve watched my dogs chase them.”
Her neighbors weren’t ready to talk to us on camera, but told us off camera they’re frustrated too.
“It’s horrible,” Gumaear said, “You shouldn’t have to live like that.”
After News 8 spoke to her, we contacted the Monroe County Health Department, who told us they’ve heard complaints from homeowners in Irondequoit as recently as August.
It’s not unusual for them to take complaints about rats.
In March, News 8 spoke to a homeowner in Irondequoit dealing with a rat infestation.
Nick Pallo with Frogger Wildlife said he’s getting calls to come get rid of the rodents often.
“[The calls are coming from] Irondequoit and all around Rochester,” he said. “It’s a big problem a lot of people have going on.”
Pallo told us the problem usually starts with a messy yard.
“Bird feeders, composting and overgrown brush piles,” he explained.
Gumaer said if that’s the issue in her neighborhood, she wants it cleaned up.
“I have an outside cat and I can’t let him go outside because I don’t want him to eat rat poisoning. I can’t let my kids play outside,” she said.
