UR Medicine will host the 2017 dSports Summit: Raise Your Game Tuesday, August 1 at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester.
Dr. Kostantinos Vasalos of the University of Rochester Medical Center discussed the event Thursday during News 8 at Sunrise.
“The Summit is really designed for our athletes and people involved in athletics in our community, so everybody from the athletes themselves, coaches, recruiters and even medical professionals like physical therapists, physicians that work with our athletes, and the purpose is really to keep athletes in the game longer, keep them healthier and enhance their performance,” said Dr. Vasalos.
Dr. Vasalos said the Summit is designed around three pillars. “This year we’ll be covering the role that mindfulness, and mental strength, and resiliency plays in sports, nutrition and how to fuel your body – pregame, during the game, post game – to stay active and healthy, as well as performance training, you know becoming faster, stronger, more agile, and even including some injury prevention principles in there.”
As it was a year ago, technology will also be featured at the Summit. “We’ve got a great list of some of our tech vendors and companies that we’ve partnered with, from sensors to other food/nutrition technologies, through Karma Water, MC10, CurAegis, so everything from tracking your sleep patterns, tracking your activity level or your movement patterns, so a lot of great stuff, a lot of great things for people to see and learn about,” said Dr. Vasalos.
Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly will provide the keynote address. “Jim will be talking about just his experience at a high level of professional athletics and the role that those kind of components that we just mentioned play in keeping you at your peak performance, you know sleep, nutrition, physical activity and mindfulness.” Dr. Vasalos said.
In addition to Kelly, national and local experts on athletic performance training in attendance will include:
William Moreau, Managing Director, U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Division
Jason Batley, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon who works with the U.S. Olympic Committee and has trained several medal-winning Olympic swimmers
Dan Panaggio, a coach and talent scout for the NBA
Brad Thyroff, a two-time tennis All-American at Pittsford Mendon High School, former ATP world ranked player, and hitting partner for Venus and Serena Williams
