A Fairport man is accused of stealing mail while working for the U.S. Postal Service.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 45-year-old James Ludwig worked for the Victor Post Office when the thefts occurred. Investigators say they received a complaint from the post office on December 27 about missing mail.

Victims said they were missing cash or gift cards. One victim was able to track her card, officials said, and found it had been used at a local store. Investigators say the store was able to identify the person that used the card. At that point, agents began surveillance of Ludwig.

Agents say video showed Ludwig taking envelopes containing greeting cards and removing the contents. Investigators say he also stole two Wegmans gift cards left in a postal box that was not on his route. Agents say he later redeemed those gift cards.

On top of that, investigators say Ludwig was seen on video “preparing two lines of a white powdery substance, which he appeared to ingest nasally through the use of a rolled dollar bill.”

Ludwig is charged with theft of mail matter by a postal employee. He faces five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
