Police say a suspicious package found outside the Federal Building in Rochester could be a hoax.
The area around the facility on State Street was blocked off starting around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning after police say a suspicious package was found.
Our crews watched as a bomb squad robot responded to the area and placed the suspicious object into a bomb containment device before removing it.
However, after the scene was cleared, police said it appeared the device might have been a fake.
“It’s not a prank,” explained Deputy Chief Scott Peters. “I just think back to Oklahoma City when all those people perished. it’s not a laughing matter, it’s not a joke, it’s not a matter that we take lightly.”
Officers say the object was found during a security check outside the building around 8 a.m. Police are now working to determine how the package ended up outside the building. Investigators are still reviewing cameras, but say it appears someone might have walked up and left the package.
Police say the person who left the object there could face a number of charges ranging from the local to federal level.
Roads around the building are expected to remain closed until police can complete another security sweep around the building. It’s unclear if and when the courts may open on Tuesday.
The Federal Building houses federal-level offices for the Rochester area along with the Federal Court.
