A bicyclist was seriously hurt after being hit by a driver who Canandaigua police say was using his cell phone.

Police were called to the area of the Byrne Dairy on South Main Street just before 3 p.m. for the collision.

Officers say the victim, an unidentified woman, was using a crosswalk when she was hit. According to police, a driver had stopped to let the bicyclist cross when another vehicle, driven by 26-year-old Christopher Catt, of Victor, swung around the stopped vehicle, and slammed into the bicyclist.

The woman hit the vehicle’s windshield and then was thrown back onto the roadway as a result of the collision, police said. She suffered serious injuries to her head and arms.

Catt was charged with failure to yield right of way and overtaking a motor vehicle that was stopped at a marked crosswalk. Police say he will also face charges for using a mobile phone while operating a motor vehicle; other charges are being considered.

The victim is being treated at Strong Memorial Hospital.
