A Penn Yan man is facing animal cruelty charges after officers say he left his dog inside a hot car.

Animal control officers responded to Clifton Springs Hospital Tuesday morning after someone reported that a dog had been left in a car in the parking lot, according to the Ontario County Humane Society.

Officers say the 2-year-old shar-pei mix named Mr. Rinkles had been removed by a hospital employee by the time they arrived.

Mr. Rinkles was given water and placed in the shade. The temperature inside the car was found to be over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

The owner, 77-year-old Robert McKay, returned to the car about an hour later. He will appear in court at a later date.

Mr. Rinkles was taken to the Ontario County Humane Society.
