‘Pencils and Paper’ gets donation from Howard Berman Prize to help pay for school supplies

Local News

An organization that provides free school supplies for teachers got a large donation Thursday morning.

“Pencils and Paper” received $132,000 from the Howard Berman Prize — named after the retired CEO of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. The money will help the organization’s store.

Many teachers say without the store, they’d have to use their own money to keep their classroom stocked.

“It’s a gift working in the city, the kids are amazing,” said Mindy DiSanto, School #15 teacher.  “So we don’t mind spending the money. But sometimes it gets to be over $500 because not only we buy school supplies like clothes and snacks and daily things they need like tissues and hand sanitizer.”

Thursday afternoon, the Rochester Police Department will help the program deliver school supplies to children in need.
