Pedestrian struck on N. Clinton in critical condition

Tuesday, at 3:15 p.m., officers responded to N. Clinton and Clifford Avenues for the report of a person struck by a vehicle.

Officers learned that a 62-year-old male and city resident crossed Clifford Avenue in the crosswalk in a motorized wheelchair when a 2007 Chevrolet van struck while making a turn.

The pedestrian was transported by AMR to the URMC for treatment. Medical personnel report he sustained head trauma and his condition is currently listed as critical, life-threatening.

The driver has been identified as Shawn Schwalm, a 44-years-old and a city resident.

He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and failure to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, police say the pedestrian has been moved out of surgery; his condition has improved, but he remains critical.
