The Ontario County Sheriff is warning about a scam that targets grandparents.
Sheriff Phil Povero says an 89-year-old man in Canandaigua received a call from someone claiming to be his grandson.
The caller said he was in jail on the west coast and needed bail money. After a few questions the man determined that the call was a scam and hung up.
Povero says if you get this type of call:
- Hang up.
- Do not agree to send a check or money or give your credit car number.
- Contact family members and let them know someone claiming to be family is asking for money.
- You should also contact police.
