For the second year in a row, the group ‘Black Men Achieve of Rochester,’ is getting ready to celebrate some of the city’s most outstanding leaders.
The nominees were announced Tuesday night in a private event at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Each nominee received a certificate of recognition. The categories range from social justice to business and public service.
Wayne Harris is the chairman of the BMA Awards.
“I think to put forth some positive imagery balances all that out and it changes some perhaps misconceptions that are out there. We’re looking to again celebrate all the accomplishments of black men here in Rochester and you know we’ve had some people say well why are you just doing it for black men and unfortunately black men haven’t had something that simply celebrated them and we want to be the first,” said Harris.
The actual award ceremony will be held Saturday, April 20. It serves as a fundraiser for Black Men Achieve programs, such as the Mentors & Movies program, Career Spotlight program, and health and wellness workshops.
