Rochester is known nationally for its generosity in volunteerism and fundraising.  That spirit was alive and well on May 3, 1971.   That year 35,000 people took part the second annual Hike for Hope.  They walked 25 miles and raised close to $500,000 for the hospital ship Hope, which brought health care to Third World countries.  The Rochester Hike for Hope was one of the most successful in the country.  The first was in 1970.  The last, in 1976.
