News 8 Archive: Rochester Telephone rolls out the Slimline phone in 1969

News 8 Archives

In April 1969 single unit telephones were all the rage.  For the first time, a phone’s mouthpiece, earphone and dial or push-button could be held in one hand.  When Rochester Telephone rolled out its new Slimline phone, it got James Henderson, the company’s Vice President of Operations, and Leslie Wills, from the business office, to demonstrate for Channel 8’s cameras.   The Slimline was made by hometown company Stromberg Carlson.   Stromberg Carlson was sold off in parts through the 80’s and 90’s.  Rochester Telephone is Frontier Communications.  And though they’ve long since taken a back seat to smartphones, you can still buy phones just like the Slimline!
