New York issuing SNAP benefits early due to shutdown

Local News

In response to the government shutdown, that has left many federal workers without a paycheck, New York says it will issue SNAP benefits early.

Benefits for the month of February will be available for SNAP recipients on Thursday, January 17.

State leaders are urging people on the SNAP program to budget accordingly, as this is not extra money, but rather the benefits they would receive for February.

“New Yorkers receiving their February SNAP benefits early need to carefully plan their food budgets as this will need to last through the entire month,” said Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Commissioner Samuel D. Roberts. “We will continue to work closely with our local partners to ensure that all SNAP recipients get their February benefits.”

The move comes at the direction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, state leaders say.

But, if you don’t get money on Thursday, don’t worry: State leaders say only some recipients will get the disbursement on Thursday; everyone else will get them on the normal schedule.
