There’s a major effort underway to build a memorial honoring local veterans of the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
But, they need to raise $50,000 in the next month.
For several months, a group of veterans has been devoted to something they call the “Warriors of Freedom Memorial of Monroe County,” and they need your help to build it.
“To make sure that those people, those families, know that, as the community, we are grateful,” said Hector Sotomayor, president of the committee. ‘The sacrifices that you made as a parent, allowing your loved ones to go overseas and serve, that will never be forgotten.”
Dan Hasenauer is not only a veteran, he’s a gold star parent. His eldest son Jason died in the war in Afghanistan in 2006.
He says a memorial will mean so much.
“Just to have that place to go to reflect on all these people, it means a lot to me to have a place to just go and think and to remember,” said Hasenauer.
It’s set to be placed in Highland Park, connected to the path that leads to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The memorial consists of ten concrete columns, honoring each branch of the military, and commemorating the Afghanistan War, Gulf War, Iraq War and Desert Storm.
A circle at the center will honor lost and fallen soldiers.
The project will cost $300,000. So far, they have raised just over $100,000.
If they secure $150,000 by February 2, they will break ground spring of 2018.
