Tom Beaman owns a sushi restaurant in the Port of Rochester called California Rollin II.
Beaman has been in the port for 12 years, but said business isn’t rollin’ on nights when the parking lot is so packed, customers just go somewhere else.
“It hurts tremendously. Numbers go down on concert nights. You can’t find a spot [to park], so we get empty tables,” Beaman said.
Beaman, along with others in the port, said parking issues have long been a concern and it could now get worse.
Rochester City Council is slated to vote Tuesday on whether to hire a group called Community Design Center of Rochester to add more development.
“The center for design will be looking at the assets in the area; whether that’s business, human or land assets, to the whole area,” Baye Muhammad with the City of Rochester said.
Muhammad said if the Community Design Center of Rochester is hired, they will work with neighbors, stakeholders and business owners in the area to come up with a plan.
Muhammad added it’s too early to say what the plan for the area could be.
Beaman meanwhile said now all he can do is wait and hope that his business doesn’t take a hit.
“To be honest with you, you gotta as a business owner think about other opportunities outside of Charlotte,” Beaman said.
