When it comes to economic development in the form of new business and new jobs 2018 is shaping up to be a strong year for Greater Rochester Enterprise.
GRE President & CEO Matt Hurlbutt discussed some of the project wins Wednesday during our GRE Why ROC conversation on News 8 at Sunrise. Already this year, GRE has hosted 57 site visits from 29 different companies, many of which have landed new jobs for the region.
“We’ve had a great year,” said Hurlbutt. “Already to this point we’ve had 14 wins, four new companies coming to the region, and 96 million dollars of planned investment and over 1,000 jobs created in the region.”
In addition to the new jobs created, over 1,300 jobs have been retained thanks to expansion from companies already located in the Rochester area. Companies like Optimax, Envative, EmployeeChannel, Partners & Napier and LiveTiles each recently announced plans to expand in our region.
“We’re happy to connect any company to the right people and the right resources to help them grow,” Hurlbutt said. “Ideally that’s attracting new investment to the region, but also those companies that may be looking to expand their operation here, and we’ve been engaged with some really good companies in that effort lately.”
Hurlbutt said there are many factors which make Rochester attractive to prospective companies, but one stands out. “It’s really about talent, talent and talent. Everything now is driven by innovation, knowledge creation, also the ability to have affordable talent readily available and we’ve got a good business environment, as well as the connectivity among our businesses and our business community, our leadership in those businesses and our colleges and universities.”
He also noted Rochester lies within about 10 hours of 128 million potential customers, affording the presence and access to those big markets without the big market cost.
Little things can make a big difference in the world of economic development, and Hurlbutt said everyone who lives in Rochester can contribute. “One of the big things that we’ve been talking about recently is just being positive. You saw some of this with the Amazon headquarter proposal that we put out. We have a great story to tell. We’ve got great growth with technology and innovative companies across the spectrum – from food and beverage, photonics, development and research optical companies, information technology, advanced manufacturing – and there are a lot of good things going on. And we are a good place to live, work and play, a great quality of life, and it’s supported by companies like Moody’s Analytics.”
