Nazareth College breaks ground on Special Olympics training center

Local News

Nazareth College broke ground Thursday on a brand new Special Olympics training center.

The 91,000 square foot facility will feature an indoor track, field, courts and training facilities that’ll serve both Nazareth students and Special Olympics athletes.

Local philanthropist Tom Golisano contributed $7.5 million to the cost of the $23.5 million project.

He says New York state has been a leader in bringing people with disabilities into the mainstream.

“I want to congratulate the state of New York,” said Golisano.  “And, I don’t say that often, but they’ve done a real good job and this is just another next step. Having the athletes intermingle with the college students, it’s a great idea.”

The Golisano training center is expected to open by the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year.
