The Gates Police Department has issued a safety alert after a motorized bicycle catches fire following a crash.

On Tuesday morning around 7:45, Gates Police responded to an accident near the 1100 block of Buffalo Road. Police say a 37-year-old man was traveling west on the shoulder of Buffalo Road on a motorized bicycle when a vehicle traveling east made a left turn into the path of the bicycle.

The man on the bicycle was ejected and suffered serious head injuries. The bicycle caught fire, which was put out by a passerby with a fire extinguisher.

Gates Police would like to remind anyone with a motorized bicycle to use caution and be familiar with all state and local laws. Motorized bicycles can reach speeds of 35 to 55 miles per hour. According to police,  most standard bicycles are not equipped or safe enough to reach speeds of that level.
