Motorcyclists urged to use LED lights as extra precaution

Local News

This time of the year can be especially dangerous for motorcycle riders, as deer are frequently seen out on the road.

Thursday night, a motorcyclist died after striking a deer and then a guardrail in the Town of Mendon. Sheriff’s deputies say Thomas Mincer, 28, was ejected from his vehicle after hitting the deer.

Local motorcycle shop owner, Gary Schreib, says this is an all too common occurrence, as deer are wandering in search of food and a mate between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight.

“It’s a lot to do with just being smart, and where you ride, and how fast you’re riding. But, there is some safety equipment you can use,” says Schreib, co-owner of Cycle Stop. “Part of what’s important is to have good lighting, and one of the things that’s beneficial now, for the motorcycle industry in the last few years, is, we have very good white lights that come out of the LED.”

Schreib says, even if your motorcycle doesn’t have LED lighting, you can purchase an upgrade that will allow you to see further and wider than traditional bulbs.
