A group of 500 students from the Rochester City School District had a chance to get some cool jewelry for their moms ahead of Mother’s Day.

This year marks the 6^th Annual Mother’s Day Jewelry Shop event that recognizes students’ efforts in school and allows those who reached certain attendance and behavioral goals to pick out a special gift for their moms.

Students selected a Mother’s Day gift from among hundreds of pieces of donated, gently-used costume jewelry.

“I think a lot of families in this city are not as financially well off and some children may not have a way to purchase a Mother’s Day gift for their moms,” said Erica Stanat, co-chair of the Mother’s Day Jewelry Shop program. “So this is a nice way for us to help support them and for us to recognize their great efforts in school.”

The kids also got to make a card for their moms.

The Mother’s Day Jewelry Shop program has provided nearly 3,000 Mother’s Day gifts to local students since 2012.
