This is the time of year when people start to head to the costume store to pick up a costume. One spot to pick up costumes is at Arlene’s Costumes, open year round.
“It’s been extremely busy,” said Market Manager Terri Sinopoli. She says business has been scary good, over two hundred orders online this morning, but something eerie is underfoot.
“It’s been a little unusual this year. We haven’t had that one specific item that’s just really taken off,” said Sinopoli. Some of the most popular is the super hero costumes, but those are the most popular every year. “Knights. Everything having to do with knights. Maybe they’re taking after the adults,” said Sinopoli.
Game of Thrones theme has topped the list for adult costumes. Coming at a close second; Star Wars. “Especially with the star wars movie in the mix, that always gets to be one of the most popular.”
One of the most popular scary masks is from the popular movie ‘It.’
“It has just flown off the shelves,” said Sinopoli.
For those creative minds, it may be time to dust off the sewing machine. “They’re not finding what they want necessarily in stores,” said Jackie Rivkin, owner of Jackie Lynn’s Fabric Center on Ridge Road in Rochester. She said business is pretty good in October. “People want a decent sewing machine to make costumes and some fun fabrics to get creative with,” said Rivkin.
Customers come in with an idea and they help make it a reality. “Sometimes kids have rather unusual requests.”
For safety, many manufacturers are including reflectors with the costumes. There is also reflective gear for purchase at most costume shops to be more visible while trick-or-treating.
