News 8 wants to thank everyone who donated to the Hurricane Relief Telethon for Puerto Rico.

We teamed up with the Ibero American Action League to raise money for the American Red Cross.

The money will be used to help people in Puerto Rico, which was also devastated by Hurricane Maria.

An estimated 30,000-40,000 people in Monroe County alone have loved ones and friends there.

“We are feeling sad and emotional about what’s going on on the island,” said Ysenia Ramos-Torres, treasurer of the Puerto Rican Festival.  “Many of us have family members and friends that we’ve just gotten hold of, many of us have not.  We feel this is a little bit of what we can do to help out.”

“It has been extremely difficult for eeryone both on the island and the mainland,” said Martiza Buitrago, a local attorney. “And I am so grateful to everyone who’s calling in  and everyone who’s donating.”

The telethon raised $100,254. That includes $30,000 from Harris Beach, $12,000 from the ESL Foundation, $5,000 from Paychex and $1,000 from the Puerto Rican Festival.
