Medical examiner testifies in Erica Bell trial

Local News

It has been an extremely emotional few days in the trial of Erica Bell, accused of killing a three-year-old girl from Greece. She is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend Michael Stagles’ daughter, Brook, in November.

On Wednesday, the medical examiner testified about the injuries Brook sustained, including bruising all over her body, and what ultimately caused her death — a blow or blows to the abdomen which caused trauma to her bowel.

Two other witnesses briefly took the stand as well. Courtney Bell, the defendant’s sister, and her boyfriend Omar Hossain saw Brook at their baby shower the day before Brook died.

Courtney and her boyfriend said how sick Brook looked. Courtney called police the next day. but it was too late.

The prosecution alleges Erica hit Brook and prevented anyone from getting her help. The defense says both Erica and Brook were victims of Michael Stagles and domestic violence.

The prosecution tells News 8 that they expect to be done presenting their case Friday. The defense declined to speak with the media after court on Wednesday.

Michael Stagles is expected to go on trial later this month.
