A racist and disturbing tweet has sparked anger on Monroe Community College’s campus. Many students say this is part of a bigger conversation.
On Monday, students and staff gathered to discuss a series of topics about race relations and hate speech after a MCC student sent out the following tweet, which has since been removed.
The faculty and staff at MCC said they have tried to contact the student, but his account is now private and they have no way of getting in touch with him.
Ann Kress, MCC’s president, says it is possible the student could face disciplinary action.
“If through the review we see that there has been some sort of student code of conduct violation. But throughout this, I really want to emphasize freedom of speech is important to the college.”
“This student sort of kind of does the same thing, and singles out all black people and tells us basically we can go back to being slave,” student Lakisha Simms said. “And to hear that he is not going to be reprimanded.”
MCC is holding another summit on Tuesday with faculty and students.
