Man attacked, robbed after meeting for Craiglist purchase

A Rochester man is accused of attacking and robbing another man after the victim agreed to meet him to purchase items off a Craigslist ad.

Twenty-seven-year-old Hakeem Newsome is charged with robbery. 

Police say the incident happened Tuesday on Lyell Avenue in Gates. Newsome is accused of repeatedly punching the victim and taking his belongings.

Newsome is in the Monroe County jail on no bail because he is has a prior felony conviction.

Gates Police have the following reminders before you buy or sell an item online:

Insist on a public meeting place like a cafe, bank, or shopping center.
Do not meet in a secluded place, or invite strangers into your home.
Be especially careful buying/selling high value items.
Tell a friend or family member where you’re going.
Trust your instincts.
Don’t go alone.
Perform the transaction during daylight hours.
If it sounds too good to be true, it normally is.
