Lockport CSD begins testing components of new facial recognition software

Local News

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) — Lockport City School District is testing a controversial new security system on Monday.

It is a dry run for the Aegis system.

The facial recognition program purports to keep the school safe by telling the district when someone who could be a danger is on campus, but people against the system call it an invasion of privacy.

The New York State Department of Education says the school district is testing components of the system this week, but the facial recognition software won’t be used during the week.

Staff members from the department plan to visit the school district to learn more about the system.
