Earlier this week Governor Andrew Cuomo talked about his intention to legalize recreational marijuana use for adults.
Today, the New York State Association of Police released a statement opposing those legalizations.
While the group says they will obey the law once it is put in place, they want to be open about the possible issues they would face while policing the community.
The association said traffic safety is a major concern, citing the increase in vehicle-related fatalities by 62 percent in Colorado the first year marijuana was legalized in the state. There is also concern that law enforcement agencies in New York will face a severe financial strain without additional funds.
Health risks were also a concern for the association which represents over five hundred police chiefs, commissioners and superintendents in New York State.
