Local florists scramble to prepare for their biggest day of the year

Local News

Spending on Valentine’s Day is expected to reach over $20 billion dollars, a new record according to the National Retail Federation.

The average American said they would spend around $160 this year, up 13 percent from last year. Flowers are one of the most popular gifts, many being delivered on Valentine’s Day. “Most guys like to send flowers to their girls at work,” said owner of Fioravanti Florist Wayne Perlo, “But there’s some girls that are home, so it’s probably half and half.”

Spending may be going up because of a new trend in recent years that is spreading the love to children, parents, pets, and even co-workers.

The flowers mostly come from South America. “From Ecuador, Columbia, Costa Rica, they go to Miami, and from Miami they’re distributed all over the country,” said Perlo.

In order to keep them going change the water daily, cut the stems on a slant, keep them away from any heaters, and don’t let the sun shine on them.
