The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office will be taking to the skies with their newest piece of equipment.
They’re the first in the area to use these drones, called UAVs, or “unmanned aerial vehicles.”
Deputies say they can use them for all sorts of situations, from search and rescue missions, to gathering evidence, to active shooter scenarios. The sheriff says the drones will not be used for surveillance.
The Sheriff believes pretty soon, all law enforcement departments will be using them.
“You look at how effective and efficient these UAVs can and will be,” said Sheriff Tom Dougherty. “You can’t get a helicopter down that low without some risk and these you can. You can take them into wherever they need to go.”
The Sheriff’s office currently has two drones, and three deputies are trained as pilots.
