As the Lilac Festival begins, many are looking ahead to a summer staple on the festival scene, the Corn Hill Arts Festival set for July 8 and 9.
2017 Festival Chair Bill Kelly discussed this year’s Emerging Artists Expo and Fairy House Series author Tracy Kane discussed the annual Fairy House Tour Friday on News 8 at Noon.
“It’s all about children going out into nature and finding little pieces of nature to compose their fairy houses with,” Kane said of the idea behind her popular fairy house books. “Through the stories that my books tell, that I illustrate, it’s become a multi-generational pass time because grandparents, families, all ages are involved. At the Corn Hill Festival – I think this is it’s fifth year – are our Fairy Houses. It’s one of the most popular Fairy House events I’ve seen across the country, and they do tremendous work, fairy houses little to big, and then the winners go on to display at the Strong Children’s Museum.”
You can make your own fairy house and have it be displayed at this year’s Corn Hill Arts Festival. The submission deadline is June 16. Kane will be at The Strong Museum of Play this Saturday, May 13. “They’re having a little fairy event at The Strong Children’s Museum of Play,” Kane said. “I think the event starts at 10:00 a.m. and goes until 3:00 p.m. I’m going to be there doing a reading, and giving you ideas for building fairy houses, hoping that you’ll build one for the Corn Hill Festival. I think my readings are at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and there are other fun events happening there.”
The Emerging Artists Expo has become an important part of the Corn Hill Arts Festival. “This year we’re happy to have ESL Federal Credit Union back as our presenting sponsor overall, but the Emerging Artists Expo, sponsored by MVP Health Care, is a focus on young and aspiring artists,” said Kelly. “The festival team, about 2009, decided that there needs to be an opportunity for young and aspiring artists to be in a real arts festival where it’s judged, they get their own booth space, and they are all together on Eagle Street, which is a great location, not too far from the Fairy Houses, and we help them with transactions so they can sell their art. We also give first, second and third prizes, so it’s a great experience. We need the young artists to apply now because the deadline for that is May 31.”
Kelly also said the offical poster artist this year is a former emerging artist. The poster and artist’s identity will be revealed at at later date.
