Veterans Memorial Park in Penfield is the place to be this Sunday, September 23 for the tenth annual “Walking on Sunshine” to benefit Mary Cariola Children’s Center.
This year’s event goes from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Mary Cariola Children’s Center President and CEO Karen Zandi discussed what fundraiser and how this year’s proceeds will make an impact Monday during News 8 at Noon.
“Over the past ten years we’ve raised about $1.2 million,” said Zandi. “Come out and have fun with your children. We have all kinds of kids’ activities, from face-painting to hair-braiding. This year there’s a special ‘video mobile’ event, so this will be pretty exciting because it’s accessible. For kids with ambulatory challenges — might be in wheelchairs — we’re very inclusive in our event. You get to meet a lot of our Cariola family – kids, parents and staff. It’s just really a lot of fun, and raises money for an exceptionally good cause.”
Each year the money raised through Walking on Sunshine directly impacts the quality of care offered at Mary Cariola Children’s Center. “Last year we were able to make some major improvements to some of our residences, and additional therapy needs in our school,” noted Zandi. “This year’s focus is really about the kids and their needs. As many folks in the community know about Cariola, if you know a child that has participated in one of our services, the way we look at their care and treatment is very individualized. We really need the funds this year for purchasing specialized equipment. Sometimes it’s sensory equipment. It may be some technology tools that allows us to really enhance the communication with some of our children with autism that really struggle with that. It’s really about kids programing this year.”
