Fire departments honor chief killed in snowmobile crash

Local News

Fire departments are honoring a firefighter killed over the weekend.

Tom Hetherington, the assistant fire chief in Middlesex and the former Churchville fire chief, died in a fatal snowmobile accident on Friday night.

Hetherington had also worked as and as a fire investigator for the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

Honoring Hetherington, Middlesex firefighters have put up a memorial in front of their fire hall. A sign reads: “Forever in our hearts. We love you. RIP Tom Hetherington 803. Fly high.”

The memorial also includes a fire gear.

The Churchville Volunteer Fire Department remembered Hetherington with a post to Facebook on Sunday morning. It reads in part:

Tom will always be remembered as someone with a great personality and sense of humor. He was always taking the time to teach newer members with his wealth of knowledge. Our hearts are heavy for his family and the Middlesex Hose Company. Rest in Peace Chief, we will miss you.
