SODUS, NY (WROC) — The Texas woman charged in the murder of her ex-boyfriend and his girlfriend has accepted a plea deal.
Charlene Childers appeared in court on Tuesday where she entered her plea. As part of the agreement, the murder charge against Childers will be reduced to manslaughter. She will also waive her right to appeal.
Childers, along with her current husband Timothy Dean, was arrested last year, weeks after the shooting in the village of Sodus that left the neighborhood on high alert.
On October 22, deputies said Dean, who was a sheriff with a police department in Texas, opened fire on Joshua Niles and Amber Washburn outside their home on Carlton Street, killing both. A witness told News 8 at the time that a baby was in the vehicle as the suspect opened fire.
Investigators launched a manhunt in the aftermath of the shooting that lasted more than a day and closed down the Sodus Central School District.
Deputies said the motive behind the shooting appeared to be a custody dispute between Childers and Niles.
The plea comes a week after a judge ruled Childers and Dean would be tried together.
Childers is set to be sentenced in June.
