A Rochester man is facing charges after deputies say he stole $10,000 by passing fake checks.
John Howard, 48, is charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of a weapon.
Deputies say Howard made fake checks and, over the course of years, passed more than $10,000 worth of checks. He was arrested after deputies executed a search warrant on Tuesday. They found check-making equipment including a computer, printer, check stock and magnetic ink.
During the search, investigators also found at least 25 counterfeit bills including $100, $50 and $25 bills along with a rifle.
Howard has a record too, deputies say. He was convicted of murder in the second degree in 1990.
