Boat races, beer and the Erie Canal: All three are being combined into a new and exciting event in our region.
It’s called the “Erie Armada.” The event was announced as one of the winners in the state’s Canal Competition. Organizers hope this will boost tourism along the Erie Canal.
During the event, local breweries would create boats out of items like cans and barrels and race 15 miles on the canal. We spoke with canal officials about how they came up with the idea.
“We started looking at the history of the canal and saw the beer history and then low and behold the craft beer scene in New York state, and particularly up here along the canal, it’s been booming in recent years,” explains Rory McEvoy, Erie Canal Area 4 president.
The Erie Armada could launch as soon as next year in Baldwinsville, outside of Syracuse. The other winning proposal was creating pocket neighborhoods along the canal for young families.
