The 6th annual Spread the Word to End the Word day will be held Wednesday, March 2 at sites across the Rochester region.
Courtney Dolan, the Public Education Coordinator at Starbridge, and Steve Salluzzo, the President at Bishop Kearney High School, discussed the initiative Wednesday on News 8 at Sunrise.
Dolan said the campaign, spearheaded by the Golisano Foundation, is about partnering with people with disabilities, their families, and the community as a whole to be mindful of the language we use. Starbridge stands with the Golisano Foundation, Special Olympics and numerous schools and organizations to end the R-Word, and the R-Word is “Retarded.” Dolan said people use the word sometimes without understanding the hurtfulness of it, and how it is degrading.
Salluzzo said Bishop Kearney is one of many area schools participating in the campaign to end the R-Word. On Wednesday, schools, colleges and organizations will hold events to sign the pledge to end the R-Word. You can find information about those events, and take the pledge as well by visiting the Golisano Foundation website, click here.
