As their name suggests, first responders are the first at the scenes of many dangerous and tragic situations, and comfort dogs can help reduce the emotional impact that’s a part of their jobs.

The Town of Gates Emergency Services welcomed the Lutheran Church Charities comfort dogs during a special community event on Monday, held at the Gates Fire District Headquarters.

There was a lot of tail-wagging, and free hugs with the dogs. Something that the Gates Fire District Chief says can make all the difference in the world.

“Some of the work that we’re exposed to, it plays havoc on us emotionally,” said Chief Jim Harrington. “And to have these dogs, just to be able to pet for a minute and kind of let go of everything, I think it’s very helpful from a mental health perspective.

The LLC comfort dogs are part of a non-profit organization that travels around the country to help first responders in need.
