An officer from the Greece Police Department were in pursuit of a vehicle chase Sunday on Route 390 northbound just before 3 a.m.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle on West Ridge Road when the vehicle appeared to begin pulling over but fled northbound on Route 390.

GPD said after a short distance, the suspect vehicle proceeded onto the off ramp at Vintage Lane and struck a tree on the northeast corner of the intersection.

Officers identified the driver as 20-year-old Jimmy Montgomery.

The vehicle caught on fire and Montgomery was trapped inside and lost consciousness.

A Greece Police officer put the fire out with a fire extinguisher and officers were able to gain access to the passenger side and assist EMS in treating Montgomery.

A crew from the Ridge Road Fire Department responded and was able to extract Montgomery from the vehicle.

Montgomery did not have any passengers in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

EMS transported Montgomery to an area hospital where he is currently in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are forthcoming.
