After being told they couldn’t set up in front of local posts offices, veterans who distribute poppies in exchange for donations have a new place to go: the DMV.
Post offices in Monroe County announced they would be enforcing a long-standing policy against soliciting money on their property. The Monroe County Clerk said this fundraiser should be an exception.
“Our veterans fought for our country and our freedoms over the years,” said Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello. “Disallowing them from distributing poppies and taking donations was a big disservice.”
Bello worked with the VFW which oversees the fundraiser to keep it going this Memorial Day Weekend.
In a release Thursday afternoon, Rep. Chris Collins called on the Postmaster to review rules regarding veterans selling poppies.
