Senator Chuck Schumer is warning of proposed budget cuts to the school safety initiatives.

President Trump and Education Secretary, Betsy Devos released the proposal just two days before the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

If passed, it would cut $425 million in spending that is used for school safety and mental health programs.

“Amidst the pages of the ink were a few pages that would raise eyebrows under any circumstances,” said Schumer, “Instead of giving kids solace that they are being protected, it gives kids a signal that we don’t care.”

The cuts would also eliminate the School Emergency Response to Violence Program, which has helped Newtown and other communities recover from trauma.

Lawmakers are set to debate the budget by March 25.
