Cuomo announces $30 million to photonics

Local News

During his State of the State address on Wednesday, Governor Cuomo proposed more funding for photonics to help the industry hub take off here in Rochester.

Cuomo is proposing $30 million to create the Photonics Related Business Attraction Fund. The proposal states that Cuomo’s office wants to build on the progress to date by supplying the funding through the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council.

The money would go towards trying to attract photonics companies to set up their manufacturing operations in the Greater Rochester area.

“I think time will tell,” said Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich. “We’v e heard about dollars going to photonics before. As the Town of Greece, all we’ve seen is a building that was new and is now sitting there an empty building that’s been off the tax rolls.”

This $30 million is included in the $600 million that’s part of a public private partnership announced nearly two years ago.
