Controversial arrest in the case of Rickey Bryant

Local News

It’s been over a year since a teenager arrested after a Rochester Puerto Rican Festival- claimed he was beaten by police.

An RPD report found the officers involved did improperly use pepper spray and didn’t have their body cameras on.

It’s been four months since City Council Member, Adam McFadden asked the the Council to conduct their own investigation to find out what happened to Rickey Bryant while he was in police custody.
Bryant claims he was wrongfully detained, he says officers fractured his eye socket— sprayed him with pepper balls and even tasered him.
This is the first time that City Council has ever conducted their own investigation on RPD. Police Chief Michael Ciminelli faulted his officers for not using body cameras and for using pepper spray– but cleared them of more serious charges– like beating Bryant and not providing medical care.
Last month an amended complaint was filed releasing the names of the officers involved in the incident.
Bryant’s attorney says knowing who the officers are will help keep the case moving forward.
