Construction is well underway on the first dog park in the City of Rochester, located in the back of Cobbs Hill along Norris Drive.
Cobbs Hill is known for its ball parks, so it’s only right to design the park in the shape of a baseball diamond.
“We will have a large dog site and a small dog site,” said Director of Buildings and Parks Mitch Rowe. “Each with its own infield. Trees, benches for the dog owners, water and other amenities. The experience will be good both for the dog and the dog owner. “
Rowe says after a series of public meetings, this site will run as a six month pilot program. If all goes well, we could soon see more dog parks in other neighborhoods.
“We would try it see how things go, both in terms of how the dogs are going to get along with each other and how the parking is going to work,” said Rowe. “You can see since we are doing some work to improve the shoulder for parking.”
Rowe describes the vision for this space as ‘dog comfortable.’
“The small dog site is a quarter of an acre and the large dog site is a half an acre,” said Rowe. “We will have water service. We will have benches and trees. We will be looking at possibly a couple of decorative fire hydrants.”
According to the city, dogs and dog owners will be able to enjoy the park this summer.
Before the park opens, the city will launch a website for dog owners to register and show proof of a valid dog license.
News 8 will keep you posted when the city’s website will be up and running.
