A group of local seniors got the chance to “Beat their Winter Blues” during a special event at Radio Social in Rochester on Tuesday.
The seniors are from the Ibero American Action League’s Centro de Oro Senior Center.
The event is a collaboration between Ibero, the Monroe County Office for the Aging and the Monroe County Youth Bureau. Seniors were able to bowl, play shuffleboard, giant Jenga and more.
The event was particularly important for Latino seniors who relocated to Rochester from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
“It is one of the things that has kept us together to be able to be centralized with Monroe County Office for the Aging to offer a day activity,” explained Raquel Serrano, Ibero. “An opportunity for them to have a nutritious meal and have an opportunity to not be alone, avoid isolation, especially after Hurricane Maria when they’ve lost so much.”
The event was also intergenerational as students from local schools were also invited to participate.
