After getting stuck on his way to The Tonight Show, television star Joel McHale took a nearly six-hour Uber ride from Rochester to New York City on Monday.
In an Instagram post, McHale wrote, “See you in a bit @jimmyfallon @fallontonight. Flight was canceled out of Rochester. We’re going to hydroplane all the way from upstate.”
McHale also tagged his driver in the post: John Costello. Speaking with News 8, Costello says McHale called him after accepting the ride.
“He was like, ‘Hey, I have to go to Manhattan, but for some reason Uber only lets me put in Ithaca as the closest destination,” Costello explains. “I was like, it’s early in the day, I might as well go out and make some money.”
He picked up the Netflix star at the Hyatt late Monday morning and the pair spent the afternoon driving downstate. Costello says he didn’t recognize McHale at first, but he looked familiar. He asked McHale what he did.
“He’s like, ‘I’m an actor,'” Costello says. “‘You might have seen ‘Community’ or ‘The Soup.’ And I was like, Oh my God, you’re the guy from ‘The Soup!’ No way!”
The ride cost McHale $700 for the Uber, but the comedian also gave Costello $100 tip through the app, $100 in cash and paid for Costello’s gas back home.
“A very, very generous man,” Costello tells us. “Most people look at celebrities and think they are going to be stuck up or arrogant. Joel definitely showed me a different side.”
Costello says McHale also sent him a nice email thanking him for making the trip.
Costello, who has only been driving for Uber for two months, was back on the road Tuesday.
McHale, who is best known for The Soup and his role on Community, was headed to Fallon to promote his new Netflix show The Joel McHale Show. His interview will air Tuesday night. He was in the Rochester area following a show at Alfred University last weekend.
