A proposed performing arts center will no longer be built on Parcel 5 — the vacant lot at East Avenue and Main Street. Now, city officials say the project is being moved to along the Genesee River.
New plans announced Tuesday by city officials will put the project on the site of the Radisson Rochester Riverside Hotel on Main Street.
The project, called the Golisano Performing Arts Center, planned by the Rochester Broadway Theatre League, would include a performing arts theater and hotel along with retail and apartment spaces.
The new plans will fit in with the city’s ROC the Riverway project, which is focused on developing the areas along the Genesee River.
The mayor says the project will now come with a $200 million price tag.
“We like this project better because the site is almost twice as big as Parcel 5 and it allows us to have a second theater which was one of the criticisms of the Parcel 5 location,” said RBTL chair Arnie Rothschild. “Everyone has been working constantly on this for the last number of weeks so this gives us a huge opportunity.”
The Rochester Broadway Theatre League estimates that the theater will hold 3,000 people and will bring more than 360,000 people to downtown Rochester.
